Organization
of the first Tunnel Church was in the early 1890's and was of the Methodist Episcopal
denomination. Meeting places were the empty house on the Tratchel property (near where
parsonage is now located), in the town house (building located near entrance to Tunnel
Cemetery) with slab benches and in the one room Tunnel school house. (building now sits
behind the Warren Township Garage & Office Building) A new building was built in 1893
(dedication held October 8, 1893) on a 100 foot square site of land donated by William
Perdew. (Present Sanctuary and Educational Building located on this original site)About 1914 the Marietta Circuit was organized, consisting of Constitution, Tunnel, Bethel and Warren Chapel Methodist Churches. There was no parsonage as most of the ministers were students attending Marietta College. The Church building burned to the ground after services the night of January 15, 1922. Plans were made at once to rebuild on the same site. Services were held in the Tunnel School house during the building program. The second Church was dedicated on May 27, 1923. At this time Rev. Robert R. Weed was minister and Dr. Frank M. Evans the District Superintendent. Minister during 1924-25 was Rev. James McKibben and Rev. Pullen served during 1925-26. The four Churches of the Marietta Circuit together with Barlow and Vincent Methodist Churches were combined to form the Barlow Circuit in 1926. The parsonage was located at Barlow in the brick home located just to the rear of the Barlow Presbyterian Church. In September 1954, Bethel, Constitution and Tunnel became the Marietta Parish with Rev. Roy Wigal serving the charge. In 1955, a parsonage was started on land adjoining the church on land donated by Mrs. Charlotte Tratchel Finch of Marietta. The parsonage was dedicated April 29, 1956 by our District Superintendent, Walter Dickhaut and a new garage for the parsonage was built in the fall of 1964. With the passing of time and the population increase a need was felt for larger facilities. It was in 1966 that the study course, "The Acts Then and Now" challenged us to a vision of the future. On March 21, 1966 a planning committee for a new church was selected. Making up this committee were Ralph Coffman, Harold Giffin, Hugh Coffman, Raymond Wynn, Mary Hinton, Jean Webb, Robert Coffman and Earl Caldwell. Building Fund treasurer is Earl Caldwell. The first means of finance was the 30 pieces of silver saved from first Sunday in Lent to Easter Sunday in 1967. $294.45 was collected. The only other means was a special offering taken on the fourth Sunday of each month. The desire to have around $5,000.00 in the treasury before starting construction was realized by 1969. The Rev. G. William Wilcher was District Superintendent. Ground breaking ceremonies for the new Tunnel United Methodist Church were held April 13, 1969. Excavating started on April 14 with the footer completed on April 25. On May 1 the first three courses of blocks were laid with the floor being poured on May 12 and 13. The week of May 20 saw the remaining 14 courses of block laid. The joist subfloor and arches were erected the week of May 27. The decking was delivered on May 30 and it was completed on June 12. The months of June and July were spent in putting on the roofing, boxing in the overhang, starting the stairs, installing the steeple and cupola and many other miscellaneous jobs. The brick laying started on August 4. Many donations have been made by members and interested persons of their time, talents, material, money and prayers. The first service was on Easter Sunday, March 29, 1970, with Sunrise Service at 6:30 and Church at 9:30. There was about 6" of snow on the ground; but the attendance was 145 for church. The first new member to be received in the new church was Jean Ann Caldwell, Linda
Johnson was second. |
